How does Botox help with Teeth Grinding/Clenching (Bruxism)?
While Botox or other neurotoxins are primarily viewed as a type of anti-wrinkle cosmetic treatment, it can also be used to treat jaw pain from teeth grinding/clenching also known as Bruxism.
What is Bruxism? Bruxism is the involuntary overuse of the masseter muscle, the large jaw muscle responsible for chewing.  This constant overuse resulting in clenching or grinding can lead to:
  • jaw pain or tightness
  • Headaches migraines
  • Worn-down teeth or dental damage
  • TMJ disorders
  • A bulky or square-looking jaw
How does Botox help?
Botox (botulinum toxin type A) works by relaxing the muscle, in this specific treatment we are working on relaxing the masseter muscle. It does not paralyze the muscle completely as this muscle is still quite important for chewing- it just weakens the strength enough to prevent excessive clenching while still allowing normal functions like chewing and speaking.
What is the process and how long does it take to kick in?
After an initial consultation with one of expert injectors, you will be assessed to ensure you are a good candidate.
Once assessed and the treatment is thoroughly explained we will move forward to treatment. The treatment itself is very simple and fast, tiny injections go into both sides of the masseter muscle and that’s it!
You will be given specific instructions for post-care and if it’s your first time we like to get you in for a 2 week follow up to see how the results are.
Results start to kick in within 3-5 days and full effects within 14 days. These results may vary depending per individual but will typically last 3-4 months.
